Best moisturisers 2025 for when your skin is dry and crusty or shiny and slippery

We've found the best moisturisers on the market, starting at just 2

best moisturisers

Finding the best moisturiser is a non-negotiable in any skincare routine. The cream or gel-like formula is applied after cleansing and toning, and moisturisers work to restore hydration lost during cleansing, keeping our complexions hydrated, glowing and healthy. What's not to love?

Moisturisers may not be the most exciting product on your skincare shelf (compared with the mighty AHA serum or plumping eye cream), but they've come a long way since your gran's trusty blue tin of NIVEA Creme. In fact, moisturisers are far from being a one-size-fits-all and widely differ depending on your skin type or goal. Tinted moisturiser is a vibe - and we're here for that summery glow, no matter the season.

Closer's best moisturisers at a glance:

Best moisturiser overall: Ole Henriksen Strength Trainer Peptide Boost Moisturiser, 33.60, was 42 on Boots

Best moisturiser on a budget: NIVEA Refreshingly Soft Moisturising Cream, 2 on Boots

Best multi-purpose moisturiser: Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré Moisturiser, 17.49 on LookFantastic

Moisturisers for dry skin are designed to deeply nourish and soothe flaky skin, especially in the winter months. On the other hand, some are oil-free and mattifying, making them great moisturisers for acne-prone skin, and some are infused with niacinamide to reduce the appearance of pores. Some are SPF moisturisers, which ensure high protection from the sun and some are designed to sit well under make-up.

It is difficult to find the right kind of moisturiser for your skin because let’s be honest, the market is super saturated, and it is hard to know what moisturiser will work well depending on your skin type. So, we've rounded up our favourite tried and tested moisturisers for every skin type, goal and budget.

How did we choose and test out the best moisturisers?

Each writer and editor below has tried and tested their moisturisers over at least three months, with the majority being long-term favourites used for more than a year after great success. We've added and tried to test a large variety of formulas - covering all skin types - and hand-picked and/or reviewed them based on texture, effectiveness, desired outcomes and how long a jar lasts. We'll be updating this list with lots of new moisturisers for you to try, don't worry. We're totally in-the-know, after all

SHOP: The best moisturisers 2025

We've thought of all the elements you may be looking for in your new moisturiser: price, effectiveness, whether it clogs pores and causes breakouts in acne-prone skin, last hydration in dryer skin types, and sensitivity to easily irritated skin. We, above all, know how hard it is to find the right pick for your skin.

These aren’t crazy expensive but will work wonders...

Ole Henriksen Strength Trainer Peptide Boost Moisturiser

Best moisturiser overall

Price: $33.60 (was 42)

For a Really Good Moisturiser that's suitable for every day, we recommend Ole Henriksen's not-so-known launch - the Strength Trainer Peptide Boost Moisturiser. Despite launching less than two years ago, the formula has received cult status thanks to its skin-loving ingredients, quick absorption and giving users ridiculously plump skin in a flash. It contains a cocktail of amino acids, peptides and ceramides to boost your skin's barrier whilst containing collagen to minimise fine lines and wrinkles. A small amount goes a really long way.

Our review: "This moisturiser is my dry skin saviour! It works perfectly for my dry skin to instantly moisturise, leaving it looking super plump. I love to exfoliate my skin with acid so this moisturiser works to repair the natural barrier with ceramides, which I've noticed has made a huge difference to my dryness. It sits beautifully under make-up but works harder at night to repair the skin as you sleep - would highly recommend!"

Pros

  • Hydrating formula which plumps skin
  • Has anti-ageing ingredients
  • You only need a small amount
  • Sits well under make-up

Cons

  • Oily skin types may find this too rich

NIVEA Refreshingly Soft Moisturising Cream

Best moisturiser on a budget

nivea
Price: $2

A good moisturiser needn't cost the earth and those with dry skin types can't go wrong with NIVEA Refreshingly Soft Moisturising Cream. With celebrity fans including Love Island's Molly Marsh and Ekin-Su Cülcülolu (who previously told us she prefers it to high-end moisturisers), the purse-friendly, age-old formula contains Vitamin E and Jojoba Oil to keep skin happy, healthy and nourished. The cream can also be used on your body and hands for the ultimate space-saver and is suitable for sensitive skin. Whilst it may not claim 'any miracles', all in all, it's a great everyday moisturiser you can rely on.

With an impressive 4.6/5 average star rating, this product comes highly recommended by many for its versatile and budget-friendly formula. It's got a thumbs up from 92% of testers on Boots. It's said to be very hydrating, lightweight and non-greasy - leaving skin soft for an extended period of time, even in cold weather. Due to its compact size, you can carry it around, and the fragrance isn't that overwhelming, either. It's usable for your face, hands and body - such a versatile pick.

However, some recent formula changes have upset loyal customers. Some reported dryness, irritations or allergic reactions. Another customer says that they've used this Nivea cream for thirty years but no longer like the formula since the change. Other niggles come with it being slightly greasy for some reviewer's needs - but it does absorb eventuality. Other than that, it's a simple, effective moisturiser for your body.

Pros

  • Can be used on face, hands or body
  • Great budget option
  • Lightweight
  • Great for sensitive skin

Cons

  • Doesn't contain any active ingredients

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré Multi-Purpose Moisturiser

Best multi-purpose moisturiser

embryolisse
Price: $21.99

You can always count on French pharmaceutical brands for great skincare, and this moisturiser is a firm favourite with celebrities and make-up artists. Despite its affordable price tag, Michelle Keegan's make-up artist even uses this moisturiser on her before red carpet events. The multi-tasking formula has been hailed as the '24-hour miracle cream' but can also work as a dependable base for make-up, an overnight hydration mask, a first cleanse, and even a post-shave body cream. Although it's suitable for sensitive skin, for sore skin that's particularly dry or compromised, it's worth trying the sensitive version instead, which contains zero fragrance.

Embryolisse's Lait-Crème is another cult favourite - with an impressive amount of five-star reviews. Cherished for its versatility and effectiveness, many use it as a moisturiser, primer and even a night cream. Make-up artists frequently include it in their kits as a great base for a make-up look. It's said to be highly moisturising and effective for dry, sensitive or combination skin - without being too greasy. Many reviewers agree that it is a "long-time favourite" because of its consistency and quality. One customer calls it their "holy grail", claiming it "leaves their make-up [looking] flawless" even in winter.

However, some felt as if it was too hyped. Another says it can create "strange lumpy bits/pilling" when they use it - which could be down to their skin type or the products they've used before it. Though with a winning formula, it can feel greasy on some skin. And, it does contain fragrance - so, may not be suitable for super sensitive skin. Overall, it's such a professional must-have for your routine.

Pros

  • Plenty of different uses
  • Good price
  • Works under make-up

Cons

  • Contains fragrance
  • Can feel greasy on oily skin types

Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base

Best moisturiser for under make-up

Bobbi Brown
Price: $54
View offer

For a nourishing moisturiser which elevates your make-up, you can't go wrong with the cult-favourite Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base. It's a favourite with celebs, with fans including Molly-Mae Hague, TOWIE's Amber Turner and Ferne McCann. As its moniker suggests, Face Base is packed with skin-boosting vitamins B5, C and E and primes skin, creating a flawless base for make-up whilst preventing greasy residue. It's created with oily and combination skin types in mind, so if you need something ultra-hydrating for dry or cracked skin, this may not be for you. We love the slight scent of grapefruit for that self-care moment, however, again something to be mindful of if you have very sensitive skin. What are the reviews on Boots actually saying about this cult product?

Celebrated as the ULTIMATE primer for makeup application, this Bobbi Brown product combines all the things you love about a moisturiser and all the things you need from a primer. What a revolutionary product. It's no surprise that this firm celeb fave comes with a high 4.7/5 stars from Boots customers; 95% of them will deffo recommend this to a pal. Whether a make-up enthusiast or professional MUA, this may be a great pick for you (or your clients).

Customers at Boots agree on its (unnumerable) pros, which are typically that it creates a smooth canvas for make-up (making foundation and concealer a dream to apply) and works well with both light beats or full-coverage looks. It's been enriched with loads of vitamins (B, C and E, to be exact), which are there for a little nourishment. Hello, refreshed skin. Not only is the formula silky and lightweight, but it's also non-greasy and said to have a pleasant scent. As one customer says rather candidly: "It’s my go-to! Keeps my skin hydrated and makes makeup application flawless.”

Critiques, though few, usually surround the price and how rich it is for some when used daily. Though many customers claim to say it works wonders for their dryer skin, it has been formulated for normal to oily skin types. It's worth getting a test to try before you buy. Or, you could get on the hype.

Pros

  • Primes skin for a flawless base
  • Glow-boosting ingredients
  • Loved by celebrities

Cons

  • Not suitable for very dry or sensitive skin types

VICHY Normaderm Double Correction Daily Care Moisturiser

Best moisturiser for acne-prone skin

xx
Price: $22

VICHY's Normaderm Moisturiser helps to minimise breakouts whilst gently moisturising skin for a clear and balanced complexion. The hybrid is lightweight, fast absorbing and includes hero ingredients, including spot-busting salicylic acid, hydrating hyaluronic acid, balancing probiotics and the brand's USP: their healing Mineralising Thermal Water. Reviewers loved how this moisturiser helped control excess oil, was enjoyable to apply and left skin hydrated and blemish-free.

Designed for sensitive, acne-prone, and oily skin, the VICHY Normaderm comes with a strong 4.6 average from LOOKFANTASTIC customers, thanks to its dual-action formula. Many users agree that their acne has noticeably improved, breakouts reduced and boast a clearer complexion after using consistently. So, if you're feeling a little at a loose end about acne, this could be the pick for you. One customer says that their acne became "milder" after one month. How cool is that?

Reviewers love the non-greasy formula, absorption and how well it serves as a primer under make-up. Oily T-zones better watch out. It's even A-OK for users with sensitive and reactive skin. Users noticed smoother, hydrated skin with reduced blemishes and excess oil. We like this one person's review that says it mattifies your face "while keeping it hydrated". However, this positivity isn't shared by everyone. Some users have minor niggles about it not being a great pick for hydration during winter, an initial sticky feeling and a thicker texture than they'd liked.

Pros

  • Protects against pollution
  • Pores appear tighter
  • Unclogs and minimises breakouts
  • Great for sensitive skin

Cons

  • Formulated to work best for oily, combination, acne-prone, and sensitive skin - dry skin will not benefit, espeically in the winter months

We all know the importance of wearing high sun protection daily, but oily skin types (or anyone who wants to save time in the morning) could benefit from a 2-in-1 SPF moisturiser. Ultra Violette's unbeatable sunscreen is loved for delivering top-tier protection, looking great under makeup, and giving no white cast. Customers love how it doesn't sting eyes, unlike many others and is perfect for no make-up days, thanks to its hydrating and glowy formula. Oh, and it's non-comedogenic, so it won't break you out.

We can't help but include this Ultra Violette Hydrating SPF with its rather impressive 4.7 star average. Many users say it doubles as a moisturiser and primer for a dewy, radiant finish - sitting well under make-up without any piling or greasiness. It's said to be a top choice for breakout-prone and sensitive skin. So many customers say they repurchase over and over again, so you know it's the bomb. Plus, it's suitable for all skin tones, including darker complexions - with no white cast. Words like "obsessed" certainly seal the deal. Lightweight, hydrating and great for daily use. However, we have to mention some drawbacks of this pick. Some users find the scent overwhelming or unpleasant.

Pros

  • No white cast and won't clog pores
  • High sun protection
  • Saves you time in the morning
  • Looks good under make-up

Cons

  • Some users find the scent overwhelming or unpleasant

Best for oily skin

Price: $17.50

A big misconception is that oily skin can't be sensitive, too, but Curel's new launch is here to balance both. The formula expertly tackles oily, blemish-prone skin without drying it out or using harsh ingredients. Oil-free and non-greasy, this moisturiser will leave skin feeling soft, smooth and balanced. But what are reviewers on Boots saying?

With a respectable 4.5/5 average star rating, this Curel pick is said to be lightweight, super absorbent, with no perfume and works well under make-up. It's said to work quite well for sensitive, oily skin. It helps clear up acne and sort out face oils while moisturising the skin. Many reviewers agree that it leaves no greasy residue, is non-comedogenic and feels weightless on the skin. As for results, users say it improves skin texture - smooth and clear - soothing, cooling and holds moisture all day. However, some find it a little sticky, isn't good enough at controlling oil, and is a little pricey.

Pros

  • Balances sensitive oily skin types
  • Unfragranced
  • Simple ingredients that quickly hydrate

Cons

  • Not suitable for ultra-dry skin types

Acne-prone and oily skin types may want a suitable moisturiser that is oil-free but still gives anti-ageing benefits, and this Kate Somerville classic works hard to do both. The fragrance-free moisturiser is packed with red marine algae and essential amino acids to help hydrate the skin, minimising fine lines and wrinkles. To balance, the formulas also contain oil-absorbing spheres, ensuring a shine-free result.

With an average of 4.7/5 stars, this Kate Sommerville Oil-Free Moisturiser comes with plenty of positive highlights to mention. It's said to be great for oily or acne-prone skin, as many of the reviews praised the lightweight, non-greasy formula. Don't worry about clogged pores or breakouts, either. Several users with sensitive skin report that its formula is super gentle and causes no redness. We love that it is fragrance-free (perfect for sensitive skin) and comes with a matte finish - if that's what you prefer. It's a long-time favourite for many users, apparently, because of its consistency and reliability.

However, some users have a few niggles: from the price point to mixed reactions to hydration (during the winter months) to some adverse reactions (some users report redness, itchiness - so may require a patch test for sensitive skin). Few reviews claim it provides only a short-term benefit.

Pros

  • Helps reduce excess oil
  • Fragrance-free
  • Designed for oily skin types
  • Anti-ageing ingredients
  • Keeps breakouts at bay

Cons

  • This may not suit the winter very well for some dryer skin types

SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 Lipid Replenishment

Best for mature skin

skinceuticals
Price: $150

www.skinceuticals.co.uk

View offer

If you're looking for a miracle moisturiser designed with mature skin in mind, this is the closest you can get on the market. The derm-approved elixir is formulated with a rich concentration of essential lipids (2% pure ceramides, 4% natural cholesterol and 2% fatty acids) for youthful and plump-looking skin. Despite the richness, it absorbs quickly into the skin and, over time, helps refine skin texture while promoting fullness and radiance. Warning: Once you've tried it, you'll never want to try anything else.

SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore is our go-to pick for ageing skin. Yes - we know the price tag is a little spenny, but so many users vouch for this rich, lightweight and hydrating cream. One customer says it's perfect for dry skin and delivers unmatched softness - who noticed results after four weeks. Another person calls it the "gold standard" and claims that regular use can even close pores. After consistent nightly use, mature skin should see a significant reduction in fine lines and nourished skin. It's said to be suitable for most skin types - offering hydration to dry skin in winter months very well and plumping up normal skin, even showing results under make-up. It's soothing, restorative and subtle.

When it comes to negatives, there are a few problems regarding skin type suitability. Whilst some reviews transitioned to this cream with no breakouts, others weren't so lucky. Experiences range from that it's too thick for daily use to it may have been responsible for breakouts, acne or irritation. Plus, the essential oils included seem to cause some reactions in those with sensitive and dry skin. Negative experiences suggest the product may not be suitable for individuals with sensitive, acne-prone, or reactive skin types.

Pros

  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
  • Packed with ceramides
  • Instantly plumps skin

Cons

  • Product may not be suitable for individuals with sensitive, acne-prone, or reactive skin types

How to choose a moisturiser:

When choosing a moisturiser best for your skin type, it's worth considering your overall goals and concerns. First off, you should identify your skin type - oily, dry, combination, or sensitive.

Oily and combination skin types may find an ultra-rich formula too greasy and should opt for opt for non-comedogenic formulas. Dry skin types will need more hydration, so will usually suit thicker formulas. Sensitive skin may require fragrance-free and hypoallergenic options. Gel moisturisers are often lightweight formulas, a good medium place for pesky combination skin types - and offer a dewy look.

Next, check the ingredients. Opt for moisturisers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid for hydration, glycerin to lock in moisture, and antioxidants to protect the skin. Moisturisers with vitamin C can help brighten up your complexion, and if you're shopping on a budget, there are plenty of brilliant all-rounders under 20 that will truly deliver. Avoid products with alcohol, fragrances, or harsh chemicals that could irritate your skin.

Get your hands on a tester, if you can, before committing to the full-sized product. Alternatively, patch-test a small area of your skin to check for adverse reactions.

Moisturiser FAQs

How often should I change my moisturiser?

You should regularly assess your skin's needs, as it can be affected by factors like weather, hormones, and age. If you notice changes in your skin's texture or condition, it may be time to reevaluate your moisturiser.

You also may need a heavier moisturiser during colder, drier months and a lighter one in warmer, more humid weather. If your current moisturiser no longer provides adequate hydration or if you experience irritation or breakouts, it could be a sign that it's time for a change. Don't rush to switch, though - your skin needs time to adjust to the new product, so give it a few weeks.

Unsure about your skin? We'd always recommend speaking to a dermatologist if you can, for a personalised skincare routine.

How often should I apply moisturiser?

We recommend moisturising twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Remember: consistency is key, and your skin type will determine which products are best for you.

Do I need a moisturiser with SPF?

Yes, you should include SPF in your routine, whether this is in your day cream or applied as a final step. SPF is essential in protecting your skin from damage. Many dermatologists recommend using at least factor 30 for adequate support.

Closer writer Piper Huxley raves about The Inkey List's Dewey SPF30.

Can I use the same moisturiser for day and night?

Most moisturisers can function during both the day and night. But it is recommended to use separate products for each time of the day. Some day creams come with benefits that won't help you at night - such as built-in SPF for super-handy protection. Night creams are important to use while you sleep as they focus on repairing and hydrating during this time.

How do I know if my moisturiser is hydrating enough?

Hydration could be something you're missing from your skin routine. Often, dryer skin types will need hydrating support both day and night. But, of course, in the case of very dry and/or sensitive skin, some products will inevitably make us question: is it hydrating enough?

Our advice: check if your face feels soft, plump, and smooth after, with no tightness or dryness. Pinching your skin is a good way to find out how effective your hydrating moisturiser is. If your skin bounces back quickly, you're all good. If not, you may need to switch to a different formula or add a hydrating face serum to your routine for that little extra boost.

We recommend these hydrating serums for dry skin:

Great value: BYOMA Hydrating Serum
Subscription pick: Beauty Pie Triple Hyaluronic Acid
Boujie buy: DRUNK ELEPHANT B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum
For under make-up: SUMMER FRIDAYS Jet Lag Deep Hydration Serum
Suitable for all skin types: LANEIGE Water Bank Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Best for mature skin: Youth To The People Superfood Skin Drip Serum

What ingredients should I avoid if I have sensitive skin?

Have skin on the sensitive side? We've put together of things we think you should avoid when looking at skincare. Of course, this isn't a guide you should take literally - after all, it takes a little trial and error to see what you're most reactive to. Test the below with caution...

Fragrances may smell lovely but they can lead to allergic reactions. Our advice: switch to natural products or fragrance-free versions of products you've not got on with in the past.

Sulphates are known to cause dryness and irritation (typically appearing in the form of sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate). Instead of this pesky duo, pick out products that are sulphate-free and gentle on the clean. You want to keep your skin barrier in good nick.

Alcohol is the worst ingredient for sensitive skin. Always opt for products without alcohol present if you value any form of hydration. For those with dry and sensitive skin, beware.

Exfoliants that are way too harsh can be too much for sensitive skin. Face scrubs with gentle ingredients are your best bet for smooth skin. The less abrasive the ingredient, the better.

Parabens are essentially preservatives and have been known to cause irritation and reactions in some with sensitive skin. Check for parabens the next time you pick something up.

Artificial colours sourced from artificial dyes will likely cause irritation. Hard avoid.

Too many active ingredients can overwhelm your skin. Introduce new products slowly, and don't cram your routine with various acids (and the like). Be gentle and mindful.

Essential Oils are so gorgeous burning away during a yoga session or utilised in a massage. No matter how lovely, they are not the best product in skincare, particularly for dry and sensitive skin. Not only can some irritate, but some scents can cause allergic reactions.

Vaseline or any form of petrolatum may cause break-outs. Go for Aloe Vera, instead.

What type of moisturiser is best for dry skin?

Caudalie calls moisturisers a "vital ally" for those with dry skin types. The brand says that these products "work their magic" by locking in hydration, nourishing the skin, providing relief from any itchiness, and preventing further drying. They are essential to improving and maintaining your skin's health. But what ingredients should you be looking for? We explain below.

Check skincare ingredients for moisturising (and nourishing) components such as hyaluronic acid, organic oils (e.g. jojoba, shea, almond, sunflower) and glycerin. As mentioned above, you should avoid ingredients such as sulphates and parabens - which can make your skin even dryer. Aside from dryness, we've found our favourite products for dehydrated skin.

Are there moisturisers that won't clog pores for oily or acne-prone skin?

Yes, if you're prone to waking and finding your face covered in unsightly spots, you are in luck.

There are several non-comedogenic (the fancy term for it won't block pores) moisturisers for oily skin. These products should provide hydration without clogging any pores or causing breakouts. When on the hunt for skincare, those with oily or acne-prone skin should look for non-comedogenic and oil-free moisturisers. We love ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and ceramides which do just the trick, without any irritation breakouts.

Combination skin moisturisers, too, should ideally avoid these ingredients.

Our top tip: Patch test new products before you use them properly.
