Pokemon's are cute and very sweet. But what animals are they or are they based on? Atsuko Nishida, graphic artist and one of the creators of some of the characters in Pokémon franchise, revealed in an interview with Yomiuri Online the origin of Pikachu, the most popular character in the squad.
If you thought it was based on a mouse, the answer is no. Thankfully the mystery has been solved as the creator revealed her source of inspiration:
"I must say that initially I designed a character that resembled daifuku rice confection 'vertically long with ears'. But after they told me it had to be cute, I thought again. At that time, I really liked squirrels, I really wanted to have one as a pet. That's why the swollen cheeks and a nice long tail. "
This is how Nishida created Pikachu on her computer using large pixels and Ken Sugimori, another of the artists, took charge of the illustrated version. Once the prototype was finished, the Game Freak Inc. president, Satoshi Tajiri, adored the character although he decided to classify it as if it were a mouse.
Nishida ended the interview by commenting that now he finally expects Pikachu fans to be satisfied with the true origin of the character. But of course!
